Introducing the Basic Science Research

What Is Basic Science Research?

Basic science research is also known as “bench research” which serves as the critical foundation for any applied or clinical research that follows. It utilizes hypothesis-driven experimental designs (involving animal subjects and in bench laboratory settings) to elucidate and understand basic mechanisms and hidden biochemical pathways on a cellular, molecular level. New research discoveries can help build on each other to late contribute meaningful ideas for clinical applications such as medications or vaccines.

Emily’s Research Journey
My research interest first piqued when I realized how medical advancements to improve patients’ lives cannot happen without the fundamental discoveries made from scientific research. When I became involved with my first lab at my alma mater back in the United States, I greatly enjoyed the process of critical thinking and learning technical skills that accompany a research project. Whether it is growing neural stem cells to improve stroke recovery in a rat model or using medical technology to improve patient safety in hospital setting or evaluating the impact of gut microbiota changes on obesity reduction in bariatric patients, all this exposure have molded me into an independent thinker and a passionate lifelong learner.
